Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD)
Many children struggle with self-regulation. This can manifest as inappropriate behaviors and interactions with others, difficulty staying organized, and academic underachievement. When a child deals with these things day after day, his or her self-esteem and sense of self-efficacy can be damaged.
Behavioral therapy is a necessary component to work with these children to build the skills that will help them to be successful in both their academic and social/emotional lives. Some parents are willing to try medication to help with these concerns and some are not; either way, medication is nothing more than a tool that can help the child slow down enough to learn the appropriate skills necessary for success. Emily offers both individual and group counseling for children who struggle with impulsivity, disorganization, and self-regulation. Through therapy, children work on building awareness of the things that can cause problems and the focus on building the skills they need to combat the unhelpful behaviors. Please contact Emily for more information regarding counseling for your child. Emily is also available to make in-school observations of your child to help determine if an ADHD diagnosis is appropriate or to attend school meetings to help create a Section 504 Plan or Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for your child. Emily's experience working with elementary and middle school students as a teacher and counselor guides her when helping in this way. |
